چکیده

This paper discusses the design of an optimal, time{consistent tari to protect an infant{industry in the presence of learning e ects. Firms decide how much to produce, taking into account learning e ects induced by their current production and the tari policy, while the government decides on the level of tari protection. In order to ensure time consistency we solve the symmetric case without spillovers where learning leads to lower xed costs. Assuming that domestic and foreign products are imperfect substitutes for each other but perfect substitutes within each group, we use a complete linear demand system to represent domestic consumers' preferences. The analytic Markov Perfect Equilibria of this game is derived by solving a linear{quadratic di erential game. It is shown that in equilibrium, only a declining tari over time can be regarded as a time{consistent tari policy JEL: C73, F12, F13. y Department of Economics. Oligopoly with Capacity Constraints and Thresholds

Abstract   Extended Oligopoly models will be introduced and examined in which the firms might face capacity limits, thresholds for minimal and maximal moves, and antitrust thresholds in the case of partial cooperation. Similar situation occurs when there is an additional cost of output adjustment, which is discontinuous at zero due to set-up costs. In these cases the payoff functions of the...

Policy designs in a dynamic model of infant industry protection ¬リニ

This paper takes the neoclassical infant industry model, allows agents to respond to future expectations, and reveals previously unexplained relationships between protection and outcome. Policy, which projects to protect the industry until international competitiveness, may not necessarily succeed, consistent to the mixed empirical evaluations. To guarantee success, protection has to last longe...

The Theory of Concentration Oligopoly

This paper originates the theory of buyer concentration for a main raw material input for a single processing industry. The Oligopsony concentration is obtained and subsequently decomposed into several factors, affecting indirectly the industry’s profitability. It is found that the leading firms’ efficiencies hypothesis is reaffirmed due to variations associated with the marginal productivity d...

Assessing Time-Varying Oligopoly and Oligopsony Power in the U.S. Paper Industry

The U.S. paper industry has become increasingly concentrated and therefore been suspected of imperfect competition. In this study, the new empirical industrial organization approach is employed to measure the degree of oligopoly and oligopsony power in the U.S. paper industry simultaneously. The model is estimated by iterative three-stage least squares using annual data from 1955 to 2003. The r...
